Shadow BoxesA shadow box is a method to display and preserve three dimensional objects by framing them. A shadow box is a warm tasteful way to tell a story about someone. Designing a good shadow box can be challenging because you are not only dealing with three dimensional objects and their placement but also the technical requirement for mounting the objects. All of the objects mounted in a shadow are done in a manner so that they may be taken out at a later date. Which means all fabrics are sewn down and special glue and wires are used to hold down other objects. Generally, objects when they are framed by themselves do not tell a story. In order to relate the object to something or someone, to tell a story, it is recommended that additional items be added to the design. These items should relate the main item to the person who owned it; for example a letter or photo could tie an object to its owner. In the example shadow box to the left photos were used to tie the dresses and spoon to the owner - also notice how the photo was matted and framed within the shadow box to add emphises to the photos - also notice how effectively the space was used. Everything in this shadow box was mounted and sewn to come out again if needed. |
